“Fashion is my religion,” says Sharvan Kumar Ramaswamy, who feels blessed to be able to “weave magic through fabric.”

Shravan Kumar, who hails from Hyderabad India, is a craftsman at the top of his field. In his second season at Vancouver Fashion Week, Shravan showed such artistry and imagination with his runway show, one would assume he’s been a veteran at VFW for decades. Shravan’s vibrant use of colour, embroidering and embellishments had many people feeling they would wear his designs without question. What is remarkable about this presentation is Shravan’s adept ability  to bridge traditional South Asian textures and fabrics with modern Western elements into a cohesive, wearable and charming collection.

Shravan Kumar is not only a designer, he is a humanitarian and eco-friendly  designer. Through his annual event, “An Ode to Weaves and Wavers,” Shravan is dedicated to bettering the lives of weavers in India. Over a 100 weavers from remote areas of India gather to help promote bio-degradable, eco-friendly products, handcrafted in a non-governmental organization known as The Society of Aalayam where Shravan serves as Chairman. This commitment to restoring the weaves of India is crucial as it has declined in significance over the years. He is also passionate about advancing the arts and sciences of fashion design, lecturing at various premier design institutes throughout India.

Women’s Wear

Shravan’s women’s wear showcased long, flowing dresses and traditional printed skirts. His eco-friendly fabrics revealed rich textures and a kaleidoscope of colours. The models wore gorgeous pieces of jewelry and carried luxurious accessories such as bags and backpacks.

Menswear

Shravan’s menswear featured relaxed, loose fit tops and pants. Broad colours and texture indicated high quality fabrics and seam-work. His collection can work across cultural and social environments. You can mix and match pieces. Consider teaming up an embellished traditional Indian blazer with a pair of dark denim jeans or black trousers for an evening out.
